Discussion event: Sanctuary City. Migrant Struggles for Rights in the City
with Ayesha Basit and Nathan Prier (No One is Illegal, Toronto)

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015, 7pm | Faites votre jeu!, Former Police Custody and Immigration Detention Center, Klapperfeldstraße 5, 60313 Frankfurt

Within the North American context, often, the city is not only the location, but also the means of migrant struggles for social and political rights. In many places, movements have successfully called on their cities to understand themselves as a Sanctuary. These cities position themselves politically, legally or practically against the migration regime of their nation state. They provide access to services and facilities to all their inhabitants – independently of their residential status – and they let the police refrain from routine controls of residential status.
The Canadian city of Toronto has adopted such a directive in 2013, as a result of a campaign of a broad activist network. Ayesha Basit and Nathan Prier of No One is Illegal Toronto will talk about both the successes and the contradictions of this strategy and will review this development from an antiracist and anticolonial perspective. During the dicussion, we also want to ask for possible links to the setting in Frankfurt: How could further emphasis be added to the call for a „new Frankfurt practice“ (Project.Shelter), how could struggles in Frankfurt be brought closer together, and how could municipal actors and civil society be held accountable?

The discussion event will be held in English.

Afterwards solidarity bar night in support of No One is Illegal Toronto (toronto.nooneisillegal.org) and Project.Shelter Frankfurt (projectshelterffm.tumblr.com) (until midnight).

The event is hosted by: AK Kritische Geographie (ffm.kritische-geographie.de), Interventionistische Linke Frankfurt (frankfurt.radikallinks.org), Netzwerk kritische Migrations- und Grenzregimeforschung (kritnet.org)
